The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist for a Stress-Free Move

Moving is consistently rated as one of life's most stressful events. But the stress comes from disorganization, not the move itself. Follow this checklist and moving day becomes manageable.

8 weeks before moving day
- Research and book a moving company (get 3 quotes)
- Create a moving budget
- Start decluttering — donate, sell, or trash what you don't need
- Begin collecting free boxes from grocery and liquor stores
4 weeks before
- Start packing non-essential items (books, decorations, seasonal clothes)
- File change of address with USPS
- Transfer utilities (electric, gas, water, internet)
- Update address with banks, insurance, subscriptions
- Arrange school transfers if applicable
1 week before
- Pack everything except daily essentials
- Confirm moving company date and arrival time
- Prepare a 'first night' box (toiletries, sheets, chargers, snacks)
- Back up important documents and photos
- Clean empty rooms as you pack them

Moving day
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet
- Check all windows are locked and thermostat is set
- Take meter readings for final utility bills
- Supervise loading — fragile items go last (out first)
- Tip your movers ($20-$50 per person for a full day)
Hiring movers vs DIY
Local moves with professional movers cost $800-$2,000 for a 2-3 bedroom home. DIY with a rental truck runs $200-$600 plus your time and labor. For anything larger than a studio apartment or any move involving stairs, professional movers are worth every penny.
